Understanding Personas and Being Your True Self

V0 Jedi Jung Says:
This lesson connects perfectly with Mr. Benn from Tutorial #2! Remember how Mr. Benn could try on different costumes but always came back to being himself? That's the healthy way to use masks. The problem is when people forget they're wearing one - or worse, when they think the mask IS who they are!
The word "persona" comes from the Latin word for mask. In ancient plays, actors wore masks to show which character they were playing. Jung noticed that in real life, we ALL wear masks too!
Think about it: Are you exactly the same at school as you are at home? Probably not! At school you might be your "student self." With friends you're your "playful self." With grandparents you might be your "polite self." These are all different masks - different personas.
Here's the good news: wearing different masks in different situations is completely normal and healthy! It's called "social adaptation" - we adjust how we act to fit different situations.
Focused, listening, following rules
Silly, playful, being goofy
Polite, using good manners
Competitive, energetic, team-focused
The trouble starts when people forget they're wearing a mask. They start to believe the mask IS who they really are. Or even worse - they can't take it off anymore!
"The persona is the mask we wear to meet the social world. But we must never forget - it is only a mask."
Some adults get so lost in their masks that they become dangerous. A bully wearing an "I'm tough" mask might forget how to be kind. An adult wearing an "I'm always right" mask might hurt children rather than admit they made a mistake.
That's why learning about personas NOW, while you're young, is so powerful! You can practice wearing different masks for different situations while ALWAYS remembering who you really are underneath.
