Jung's Psychology Explained

Understanding personas and the magic of taking off the mask

Carl Jung

Who Was Carl Jung?

Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss doctor who studied how people's minds work. He was one of the greatest psychologists who ever lived—a kind, fair, and brilliant man who wanted to help people understand themselves better.

Jung discovered something really important: we all wear "masks" or play "roles" in society. He called these masks our PERSONA.

What is a Persona?

A persona is like a costume you wear to fit into society.

At school: You might wear your "Good Student" persona (raise your hand, be polite, sit still)

At home: You might wear your "Helpful Child" persona (do chores, be kind to siblings)

With friends: You might wear your "Fun Friend" persona (joke around, play games, share secrets)

These personas are NORMAL and HEALTHY! We need different masks for different situations. The problem comes when...

When Personas Go Wrong

Some people forget the mask is just a mask. They think they ARE the role.

Example 1: A police officer who forgets they're a regular person underneath the uniform. They start to believe they're ABOVE regular people. They can't take the mask off—even at home, they're still "The Officer."

Example 2: A judge who thinks they're wiser than everyone else because they wear a robe and sit on a high bench. They forget they're just a person who studied law—they're not actually better than other people.

Example 3: A social worker who believes they have the right to break up families because their job title says "child protection." They forget that their role is to HELP families, not destroy them.

When someone can't take off their mask, they become dangerous.

Jung's Warning: Identification with the Persona

Jung warned about something he called "identification with the persona." This means:

✓ HEALTHY:

"I play the role of police officer to help my community. When I go home, I take off the uniform and I'm just me—a parent, a partner, a person."

✗ UNHEALTHY:

"I AM a police officer. That's who I am. I'm always on duty. I'm better than civilians. They need to respect my authority at all times."

Mr. Benn leaving costume in shop

Mr. Benn Gets It Right!

Mr. Benn is Jung's ideal healthy person!

✓ Mr. Benn tries different roles (Captain, Professor, Teacher)

✓ He learns from each role and has fun with them

✓ He ALWAYS takes the costume off and leaves it in the shop

✓ He goes home to tea as himself—just Mr. Benn

✓ He never forgets who he really is underneath the costumes

"Leave the role in the roll, don't take the mask home."

What Children Can Learn

1. It's okay to try different roles! Be a student, be an athlete, be an artist, be whatever you want to explore. That's how you learn about yourself.

2. Always remember it's just a role. Don't let the costume define who you are. You're more than any single role.

3. Watch out for adults who can't take their masks off. If an adult seems to think they ARE their job title (not just someone doing that job), be careful. They might have lost touch with their humanity.

4. You can spot the stuck ones. They talk about their job constantly, they demand respect for their title (not for being kind), and they can't laugh at themselves or admit mistakes.

Jung + Mr. Benn = Perfect Wisdom

Carl Jung gave us the science of understanding personas.

Mr. Benn showed us how to live that wisdom in real life.

Try on costumes. Have adventures. Learn and grow.
But always—ALWAYS—leave the mask in the shop.
