Mr. Benn is a British cartoon character from the 1970s who has magical adventures by trying on different costumes. But there's something very special about Mr. Benn that makes him wiser than many adults...

Mr. Benn's Daily Life

  • Lives at 52 Festive Road, London - His home is always waiting for him
  • Wears a boring black suit and bowler hat every day - Just a regular person
  • Visits a magical costume shop - Where the adventures begin
  • Tries on a costume (knight, spaceman, cowboy, diver, etc.)
  • Goes through a magic door and has an adventure in that role
  • Returns home and leaves the costume behind - This is the most important part!
  • Goes back to being regular Mr. Benn - He never forgets who he really is

  • • Mr. Benn can be ANYONE for a day
  • • But he's JUST MR. BENN forever
  • • He ALWAYS comes home
  • • He NEVER takes the costume home

Persona (Jung's Definition)

  • The mask we wear in society (doctor, teacher, soldier, parent)
  • Necessary for functioning (we need roles to interact with others)
  • But NOT who we truly are (the mask is not the face underneath)
  • ✓ Healthy: Wear mask at work, take it off at home
  • ✗ Unhealthy: Can't take mask off, become the role, lose authentic self

  • ✓ Never gets stuck in one (doesn't identify as "the knight" forever)
  • ✓ Returns to authentic self (Mr. Benn at 52 Festive Road)

What Goes Wrong for Others:

  • ✗ Take costume home (can't turn it off)
  • ✗ Become the role (soldier 24/7, expert 24/7)
  • ✗ Forget who they really are (mask replaces face)
  • ✗ Get psychologically stuck (PTSD, ego inflation, fraud)
